Coyote Steals Domestic Dog

A couple of evenings ago, just minutes after watching a news segment about coyotes attacking dogs, I witnessed it myself. My son and I were less than one block from our home when he saw a coyote carrying a dog in its mouth, running along side the road. We followed it (at a safe distance, in our car) until the coyote stopped (presumably to catch it's breath) and shot some photos.

A very unfortunate part of life in the desert, especially for the little dog. Sadly, lots of people seem think 'that could never happen to my pet', only to keep posting flyer's looking for their pets not knowing their fate.

I wish I had been aware of predators coming out in midday to hunt. I never let my pets out at dusk or night time but never knew they weren't safe during the heat of the day for quick potty breaks until 7 weeks ago when my yorkie vanished within 7 minutes. Not sure what took him. It was 3:30pm. He was outside with 5 other dogs. Not a peep from any of them but my yorkie was gone without a trace in the middle of the day. If it wasn't my neighbor, it was a predator. Because I don't know for sure, I do keep searching and posting flyers. I've walked 40 acres looking for him or at least his collar. I haven't found a thing at all. I miss him and wish I knew to be more careful during the day. I had no clue. I had my yorkie for 9 1/2 years. I'm all he ever knew and loved. Heartbroken in NM
